Things To Do When You Got Your Unifi TRG212M Wifi Router

trg212mHi Folks!…. me again. Just to fulfilled a request from Hamba Allah that ask me to share what need to be done with the new Unifi TRG212M Wifi Router.

As I mentioned earlier, by default, the wireless router was configured with default settings and most of the security settings was not configured and not secured. Those unconfigured Unifi wifi router will be a wonderful place for people like me to make it as a ‘playground’ hotspots. heheheh!!!!!

So, let me share a little bit on how to make your Unifi  TRG212M wifi router secure and to make it harder for those “unwanted guest”.

BEFORE I PROCEED, DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK OK!!!! DON’T BLAME ME IF THERE IS ANY FAILURE HAPPENED TO YOU!!!!!

By using your browser, go to http://192.168.0.1 (by default) to the router administration page. Key-in the Username as admin and just leave it blank for the password. In other words, there is no password needed to login into the administration page.

1. Change the ‘admin’ password

u2

By default the wifi router comes with admin id and no password configured… so.. sendiri mau ingat la when your wifi router without admin password. You can configure it at Management tab >> User Management  then click Edit button.

2. Change the SSID Name & Wifi Security Preshared Key

u3

by default the SSID name is <your-unifi-id>@unifi and Preshared key is only numeric, so people knews that it is a default setting by Unifi and can play around with it. You can change the SSID name and the preshared key at Wireless tab >> SSID Configuration and click Edit Button. Key-in your desire SSID name as shown above.

Note: make sure the Authentication mode is WPA2-PSK/WPA2-PSK and key in yourPreshared Key with a strong alphanumeric key. *By changing this Wifi Security Key – all your wifi clients (PC, Notebook, Ipad, PDA…) need to reconnect and use the new WPA/WPA2 key.

3. Enable Anti Attack Mode

u4

In some cases, this feature are already enabled but as a precaution and confirm the Anti Attack Mode is activated you can go to Advance tab >> Anti Attack. Just enable by tick all the boxesexcept Enable Attack Log.

4. Change Wireless Bandwidth Frequency to 20MHz

u5

By default, it was configured with 20/40Mhz. This what I’ve discovered. If the bandwidth frequency is 20/40Mhz, the wifi signal is weak and the distance shorter compared if you set the bandwidth to 20Mhz only. And one more thing, some of the wifi devices such as Apple devices (Ipad, Imac, Ipod.. bla bla bla) are more stable running with 20Mhz only. You can do this at Wireless tab >>Basic.

Things To Do When You Got Your Unifi RG TMRND Wifi Router

Hello again. OK..just to share a little bit about Unifi as TM has already changed their wifi router from D-Link Dir-615 to Riger RG TMRND Gen1.0 recently in some installations. So the same issue here which is the lack of security configured by default.

As I mentioned earlier, by default, the wireless router was configured with default settings and most of the security settings was not configured and not secured. Those unconfigured Unifi wifi router will be a wonderful place for people like me to make it as a ‘playground’ hotspots. heheheh!!!!!

So, let me share a little bit on how to make your Unifi  Riger RG TMRND Gen1.0 wifi router secure and to make it harder for those “unwanted guest”.

3. Change the Wifi Security Key

By default, it was not configured; and if configured, it used the 8 digit numeric pin only which can be easily being cracked by people like me. To do this, from the Step 2 and Figure-3 above, make sure the Authentication mode is WPA2-PSK and key in yourPreshared Key with a strong alphanumeric key. *By changing this Wifi Security Key – all your wifi clients (PC, Notebook, Ipad, PDA…) need to reconnect and use the new WPA/WPA2 key.

5. Disable Remote Access

To make sure that nobody can access your wifi router, just disable the Remote Access feature. You can do this at Advance tab >> Remote Access Control. Just untick all for total block. If you want to enable ping, advice to enable only for local ping only which is source ip 192.168.0.0 with source mask 255.255.255.0 only…..

Extra info

Adding Wifi Repeater – you can use a wifi repeater to extend your wifi coverage. In most 2 storey houses, the best way to cover all area by using a wifi repeater. There are many wifi repeater that compatible with Unifi Riger RG TMRND.  I’m using Aztech Wall-Plugged Wireless-N Extender WL556E to extend my home wifi.

Replacing the Riger RG TMRND

If you don’t like Riger RG TMRND Unifi Router provided by TM, you can replace it with a few selected models and need  to Flash the router with the Custom Firmware. Ask the sales person from Lowyat or elsewhere about the Unifi Router Custom Firmware or else, you can say bye-bye for your Unifi IPTV.

My advice, if you want to replace the Unifi router, get the best one which have the gigabit ethernet and N+ 300Mbps wifi or better. The models that are compatible with Unifi  are:

Unifi oh Unifi

Agak malang kalau service down hujung minggu or hari Jumaat dimana kami menghubungi TM Custermer Service dan diorang cakap takda technician yang bekerja hujung minggu so kami terpaksa menunggu sampai hari Isnin plak.

Ni satu pengalaman kami minggu lepas.

Selasa – 29 Nov 2011

Telefon tak berfungsi, takleh call-in dan takleh call-out.

Masalah selesai.

Jumaat – 2 Dec 2011 – 10:30pm

Pada hari yang sama pada jam 10:30 malam…. Semua service Unifi takda langsung dimana phone, IPTV dan internet semua down… Call Unifi CS lagi… seperti biasa la.. dia suruh OFF dan ON kan setup box dan wifi router.. tapi service masih lagi down… then CS cakap ada upgrade kat kawasan saya dan service should be restored on the next morning @ 8am…

Sabtu – 3 Dec 2011

Pagi Sabtu (3 Dis) keesokkannya, dalam kul 10am tak restored gaks.. tunggu sampai petang pon tak retored gaks.. call balik CS… dia cakap dia akan fwdkan masalah ke network team…. Malam Sabtu pon masih takde apa-apa news dan semua service masih lagi down…

Ahad – 4 Dec 2011

Call lagi CS… dia cakap takde technician plak untuk datang check.. so kene tunggu Isnin…. HAMPEEEEEEHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! So, kat sini baru faham kalau ada masalah Unifi ujung minggu sekian maklum la kene tunggu sampai hari Isnin

Isnin – 5 Dec 2011

Pagi-pagi lagi dah call CS. dia cakap tecnician is on the way… by 2pm diorang cakap should be an update.. tapi HAMPEH takde… ada la 5 or 6 kali call CS rasernya tapi semua jawapan sama… biasalah jawapan diorang kene forwardkan masalah ke bahagian network untuk solvekan…. Dalam kul 5pm baru service restored.

Selasa – 6 Dec 2011

Telefon plak bagi problem balik.. takleh call-in n call-out balik…… call CS.. Service restored selepas reboot devices. Dalam hati terdetik macam nak kena balik jer nih

Rabu – 7 Dec 2011

Hari Rabu (semalam) dalam sebelah malam…. problem balik ngan telefon.. masalah sama… takleh call-in n call-out… kali nih dah reboot semua devices pon down gaks… call CS…. dia cakap they will attend this problem on the next day…

Khamis – 8 Dec 2011

HARI INI KHAMIS (8 Dis)….. PAGI 8 am.. SEMUA SERVICE UNIFI DOWN BALIK UNTUK KALI YANG TAH KEBERAPA TAH DAH TAK BOLEH KIRA LAGI…. CALL UNIFI CUSTOMER SERVICE…..

TOLONGLAH………. dari 29 Nov sampai sekarang  nih Unifi masih lagi problem.. takkan sampai nak masuk Aduan Rakyat kot baru nak amik tindakan…

UPDATE : JUMAAT 9 DEC 2011

Setakat jam 10:00am ni.. semua service masih down.. dah call CS diorang cakap diorang dah hantar technician dan kalau technician tak call balik sebelum kul 5.. diorang suruh call balik CS

3:45pm : semua service masih lagi down dan tak terima apa apa call dari technician… nih raser macam dah kene kencing ngan TM nih…. hampeh tul……

Sabtu 10-12-2011 12:30pm :
