6 Things To Do when you got your Unifi Wireless Router D-Link Dir-615

I just subscribed to Unifi and what I can say is the internet service is superb (for time being la)… and today I want to share a little bit about the wireless security which is a MUST be configured at the D-Link Dir-615 wireless router provided by TM.

By default, the wireless router was configured with default settings and most of the security settings was not configured and not secured. Those unconfigured Unifi wifi router will be a wonderful place for people like me to make it as a ‘playground’ hotspots.

For those who are security concern about their wifi security, these few steps could help you to reduce the risk of the ‘unwanted guest’ from being part of your wifi users.

By using your browser, go to http://192.168.0.1 (by default) to the wifi administration page. Key-in the Username as admin and just leave it blank for the password. In other words, there is no password needed to login into the administration page.

BEFORE YOU PROCEED, DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK OK!!!! DON’T BLAME ME IF THERE IS ANY FAILURE HAPPENED TO YOU.

UPDATED (26-Sep-2011)

– TM has changed the default password for the unifi but as it is an open secret.. the password combinations mostly are:

UserName : admin
Pass : (Leave it Empty)

UserName : admin
Pass : telekom

OR

UserName : operator
Pass : telekom

UserName : operator
Pass : h566UniFi

1. Change the ‘admin’ password – by default the wifi router comes with admin id and no password configured… so.. sendiri mau ingat la when your wifi router without admin password. You can configure it at ‘Maintenance’ tab and ‘Device Administration’

2. Change the SSID Name – by default the SSID name is <your-unifi-id>@unifi, so people knews that it is a default setting by Unifi and can play around with it. You can change the SSID name at ‘Setup’ tab and ‘Wireless Setup’. Click ‘Multiple Wireless Network Name (SSIDs)‘ and change under ‘Wireless Network Name’.

3. Change the Wifi Security Key – by default, it was not configured; and if configured, it used the 8 digit numeric pin only which can be easily being cracked by people like me. To do this, go to ‘Setup’ tab and ‘Wireless Setup’ under ‘Wireless Security Mode’ change to ‘Enable WPA/WPA2…’ and key in your WPA/WPA2 Network Key with a strong alphanumeric key. *By changing this Wifi Security Key – all your wifi clients (PC, Notebook, Ipad, PDA…) need to reconnect and use the new WPA/WPA2 key.

4. Enable WAN to LAN Firewall – by default, this was disabled. So, your wifi router was not protected by any firewall. To enable the firewall features, go to ‘Advance’ tab and ‘Firewall & DMZ’. Just tick the ‘Enable WAN to LAN Firewall’

5. Block WAN Ping Responce, Block FTP, Block Telnet and what so ever. From the step 4 above, just enable a few other extra security features as described. It will enhance your firewall security.

6. Change Wireless Bandwidth Frequency to 20MHz – By default, it was configured with 20/40-Mhz Auto. This what I’ve discovered. If the bandwidth frequency is 20/40Mhz, the wifi signal is very weak and the distance shorter. I’ve placed my wifi router in the living hall and couldn’t connect from my room, so once I’ve change to 20Mhz, I found that the signal is stronger and easily manage to connect with ease. You can change the Wireless Bandwidth Frequency at ‘Advance’ tab and ‘Advance Wireless’, change the bandwidth to 20Mhz only.

Unifi Router Replacement 

If you don’t like Dlink DR-615 Unifi Router provided by TM, you can replace the wifi router provided by TM with a few selected models and need  to Flash the router with the Custom Firmware. Ask the sales person from Lowyat or elsewhere about the Unifi Router Custom Firmware or else, you can say bye-bye for your Unifi IPTV.

My advice, if you want to replace the Unifi router, get the best one which have the gigabit ethernet and N+ 300Mbps wifi or better. The models that are compatible with Unifi  are:

Extending Wifi Coverage

Hi again, almost everyday I got email, sms, queries about extending the DIR-615 wifi coverage where Dir-615 router unable to cover all areas especially in 2 storey houses.  Yes, I 101% agree that Wifi router Dir-615 provided by TM are es-you-si-kay.

The easiest way to extend wifi coverage by adding a wifi repeater or wifi bridge to work along with the Dir-615 router.  Just place the wifi repeater in the weak spot location and it will increase the wifi signal tremendously.

There are many wifi models that supports these features. Just go and ask the shop at Low Yat or similar places about the wifi repeater/bridge.

These are a few suggested model from me:

  • Asus RT-N10+
  • Asus RT-N12+
  • Asus RT-N13U+
  • TP-Link TL-WA801ND
  • And many others

At last… I use the Aztech Wall-Plugged Wireless-N Extender WL556E to extend my home wifi coverage. Worth buying, now no more blind spots and I can extend up to 300Mbps of wifi speed. Just configured this baby as wifi repeater and it was kacangly easy.
Secondly, this Aztech wall plugged works great with my existing wifi router Asus RT-N56U which I bought earlier to replace the crappy Dir-615. It is fully compatible with Unifi.

 

Okla.. that’s all folks…. enjoy your Unifi.. and for those who don’t subscribe yet to Unifi….. get it now…

      by default, the signal strength is around 5-10 metres only.. but after the change, I can get around 15-20 metres in full strength… and another thing is i can watch streaming movie without lagging after the change

      to Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on

      *BY DOING THIS ALL CONFIGURATION WILL BE LOST –
      so don’t ever do this if you don’t know what you’re doing….

      username & password yang kat router nih hanya untuk router dan takde kene mengena ngan myunifi tu……

      untuk router nih, username = admin dan kita perlu tukar password dia supaya orang tak masuk router kita…..

        So with new password (admin) i set up:

        password: +my own password here+

      Memang ler…. once tukar password wifi tu.. semua devices pasti akan hilang network connection…
      so.. apa perlu buat… connect balik semua devices tu ke wifi tu dengan menggunakan password wifi yang baru

      pastikan client/pc/device boleh terima multimode frequency.. kalau tak.. letak balik jadi 20/40Mhz….

      most likely you punye notebook tak compatible dengan 20Mhz only

      Enablekan Outside Firewall Setting pada Wan Connection 1
      Saya syorkan untuk enable:
      – semua setting pada DOS ATTACK
      – semua setting pada POST SCAN ATTACK
      – setting pada SERVICE FILTER cuma enable untuk Enable SERVICE FILTER Blocking, Block WAN Ping response, Telnet Blocking & FTP Blocking

    tq k! Great info.
    I have a problem with my friends accessing my wifi. My imac is ok to get the wifi, tp when i add another mobile device, it cannot access … but there it reads the signal! hmmm. i called unifi and they say change channel to 11, so i did. it worked for a day, and now hilang lagi. any advice?

      agreed with it… most of the devices used channel 1-11 (esp US devices) but some of the device can use up to channel 13… that’s why they ask you to change channel 11… you can try to change with lower channel ..eg ch-6 for example…

      ok.. secondly.. some devices esp old device can only accept wifi a/b/g but not ‘n’ and the very old can only accept a/b only not even ‘g’ or ‘n’.. BUT this is not your case because you said that it works but failed after that…

        Bro… just confirm with Unifi Sifoo… problem with idevices(ipod,ipad,imac,…iquit) is due to the bandwidth frequency….
        Change the frequency to 20Mhz only instead of 20/40mhz which I’ve stated in Step-6

    Great post Kheirul. This one is indeed very helpful to us newbies to Unifi, especially the non-tech people like me…

    I’ve tried changing the wireless mode and bandwidth (Step 6), but sadly, the signal strength is still the same (3-4 out of 5 bars) to my room, which is about 6 meters away, for both my laptop and my iphone.

    Would you be able to help with any advise on this?

      ya agreed with you.. the unifi wifi router’s signal is quite weak…

      try to change the ‘preamble type’ to ‘long’ and compare which one got a better signal… long or shot….

      The preamble is a length of null signal before data. It gives time for receivers on the network to detect the signal and prepare to receive the data. In this case transmission speed will be a diference
      Short preamble:
      Ummmmmmmmmmm, DATADATADATADATA
      Long preamble:
      Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, DATADATADATADATA

      but in normal human being like us.. we did not notice the transmission speed difference…

        look at the figure (6) …. you can select long or short preamble settings there
        but pls make sure that your wifi frequency should be set to 20Mhz only not 20/40 auto….

      Agree with you.. once you change to 20Mhz.. the speed will reduce a little bit.. if you want the speed go with 20/40mhz auto.. and if you want the range 20mhz is the best…

    Hope you can help! I have drop-off issue all the time with iphone and the unifi (black router). It’s okay withe my imac, but for mobile devices… on off on off … gila for playing online games. Is it a router issue? I hear i have to change my black unifi router?? G or N? peningggggg. helppp! :D

      Bro… just confirm with Unifi Sifoo… problem with idevices(ipod,ipad,imac,…iquit) is due to the bandwidth frequency….

        Tks K, but i already changed it to 20Mhz, and also changed the channels to 6. Still drops off. How to stablize this? Thats why i was thinking maybe router no good?

        I think that this is the time you need to get the replacement router..
        just to let you know .. if you want to replace.. please get wifi router that can support multiple vlan (vlan500 and vlan600) … if not.. bye bye for IPTV…..

        Ask saleman at lowyatt.. they should know which models can replace unifi router

        I’m considering to buy a new wifi router also because that DR-615 always hangs and need to reboot esp when it is hot

    thanks for the tips. but only my computer which is running on windows 7 cannot connect to unifi wireless. called unifi customer service for several time but still unsolved. do you have any idea? pse need help.

      I’ve no problem connecting Win7 to my unifi router. So far, no problem with win7, ipad, nokia phone, android phone, ubuntu linux as far as it is wifi b/g/n devices.

      My advice, please check the wifi connection password and wifi security encryption i.e wpa/wpa2… and from the client computer (win7), go to Manage Wireless Network, remove all saved networks and reconnect back

      YES you can… just hooked on your Apple router WAN port to any of the port 1-3 at the TM Dlink router…

      or

      You can hook the Apple Airport Router directly to the Unifi BTU (replace the TM Dlink Router) but you will loose IPTV….

      the best solution is to get a wifi repeater or wifi bridge…
      so just beli satu wifi repeater dan pasang jer kat tingkat atas tu….

      sebab wifi router canggih mana pon takkan dapat full strength pada rumah dua tingkat…..

      model yang diyorkan Asus – RT-N13U. Cuba replace dulu… kalau tak power gaks.. set Asus – RT-N13U as repeater…..

      yeap…. kalau pakai biz pack takde IPTV…
      so apa-apa router pon boleh pakai.. cuma ko kene tahu unifi id ko ngan password aja…..

      masa installation tu.. jangan lupa mintak semua ID + passwords dengan installer…..

        maksud “Semua” id dan password tu adalah ID untuk :

        i. HyppTV Residential <- business package tarak ni ii. Residential Voice iii. InfoBlast iv. Streamyx Zone v. High Speed Internet vi. Email vii. iShield Plus viii. Online Guard Plus So in this case.. ko kena tahu id High Speed Internet tu.. biasanya userid@unfi dan password (12 or 13 chars)

    AsSalam KM, thanks for the info sharing. I have manage to change all the setting as per your guide tapi ada kemuskilan sikit kat step 3. Saya dah tukar network key to more secure password and save the changes. Now, Do I need to reset the WIFI PIN? The PIN remains as the original even after I have change the NETWORK key. Originally, PIN and network key is the same.. Thanks bro.

      yeap.. memang asalnya PIN dan network key sama…
      Its ok to change the network key lain drp PIN…

      PIN tu digunakan apabila kita click WPP(pin) button kat router and connect pc/notebook pada masa yang sama…

      kalau nak disable pin tu pon ok…

        Unifi saya connect guna cable ke desktop speed nya OK tapi bila pakai laptop kat tkt bawah, speednya slow sgt dan kadang2 tak boleh masuk langsung. Apa sebab agaknya? virus ke atau ada isu lain?

        kalau nak extend wifi coverage… just beli router yang ada features wifi bridge or wifi repeater….

        saya syorkan router dir615 yang asal tu pakai kat atas.. dan tambah satu wifi repeater kat bawah… so IPTV just connect ke router asal….

      Jawapan: BOLEH!… kalau default setting SENANG sangat.. dalam 5 minit boleh pecah punye….

      kalau dah tukar setting tu or tambah security apa yang patut.. berkemungkinan akan menjadi susah skit dan melambatkan proses hacking tu…

      TETAPI jika hacker tuh memang terlatih dan dengan bantuan tools yang canggih, memang boleh pecah masuk punye..

      cuma apa yang kita boleh buat adalah bikin diorang (hackers) tu susah skit dan melambatkan kerja dia…

      ok satu TIPS… Camne nak tahu wifi kita kena hack….
      Kalau selalu sangat wifi client(pc,notebook,ipad) dapat disconnection or tetiba jer system prompt suruh key-in username & password balik.. alamatnya ada seseorang tengah dok gode-gode wifi network anda.. sebab kebiasaannya hackers akan bagi command ‘deauth’, untuk memaksa user key-in balik username & passwd untuk dicapture… so bila diorang (hackers) dapat capture username & password…. dia akan mulakan sesi cracking the wifi password….

      kalu saya nak citer lebey lanjut pasal nih.. 4 hari setengah pon tak abis beb.. cukop sampai sini aja

      emmm…. pelik… IPTV takde kene mengena ngan Wifi Router…

      Segala passwords kat wifi router tu hanya untuk router dan clients dia shj.. dan kat wifi router tu pon takde tempat untuk configure IPTV….

      so nasihat saya… call TM untuk support

    salam,dulu saya punya unifi ada Problem dengan connection.bila siang mesti lampu signal bertukar merah,dah report banyak kali..bila technician datang semua dah ok balik,sekarang ada pulak problem baru,hanya laptop yang dapat connect wifi..phone dan ipad tak dapat..dulu boleh lak…tension lak macam ni..cmne ek nak buat

      report kat customer service TM…. itu memang problem with TM..

      kalau phone tu… cuba remove wifi dan reconnect balik
      untuk ipad.. forget wifi dulu.. then reconnect balik..

      masa reconnect balik tu.. isi balik wifi wpa/wpa2 key

        Hi, what is the connection between the TM router and the IPTV box? Why can’t replace the TM router with the Airport Exreme without loosing IPTV?

        the reason is IPTV use a special VLAN which is Vlan600 and the internet use the default Vlan500… that is why if we change the router which that router cant support multiple Vlan, we can say bye bye to IPTV

I had all the bits in place and had been trying to get it to work for so long now, 10 minutes after reading your blog its all humming along. No TV but not really missing much, the chikldren have their DVD’s and BT’s. Thanks.

    Hi, do you have any problems uploading using FTP program like Filezilla? It’s very slow for me. I’m having Unifi VIP10 but the upload using Filezilla is like 20KB/s the max. But uploading in wordpress is fast though. Any ideas? Thanks!

      bro.. that was the apps problem bro.. nothing to do with unifi..

      try to google slow ftp .. and you will find something about active/pasive transfer mode..

      waaa… so kaya aaa to use rt-56U as a wireless extender/bridge/repeater…..
      that rt-n56u is suitable for replacing the dir-615 where it can support iptv as well if you replace it…

      but if you want to use rt-n56u as a wifi repeater also can… you just go to ADVANCE WIRELESS then BRIDGE.. then click the discovered available wifi .. then key in your SSID (from dir-615) and key in the wifi key

      Adehhh!!! soalan cepu mas nih…
      OK.. TM cuma bagi satu aja IPTV setup box.. so basically satu TV aja buleh cucuk guna HDMI cable tu…

      Tapi kalau nak sambungkan 2 TV atau lebih… BOLEH… sila pi Lawyat dan beli satu alat namanya HDMI SPlITTER… ie… satu input and multiple output…

      cuma kalau guna alat nih… semua TV dapat siaran yang sama la
